The Definitive Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Main Quest Walkthrough

In the world of Avalon, a land suffering from a reality altering force called the Wyrdness and a plague known as the Red Death, the player starts as a prisoner whose soul is bound to the long dead King Arthur. The primary objective is to help restore Arthur’s soul by journeying across the island’s three main regions, the Horns of the South, Cuanacht, and the Forlorn Swords, to find his three legendary relics: the sword Excalibur, the Shield of Palamedes, and the Helm of Arthur.

This guide will walk you through the main story, step by step. A quick heads-up: don’t just rush through the main quests. This game is tough! The developers want you to explore, take on side quests, and get stronger. Doing so will reward you with better gear and experience, which you will definitely need.

A Journey Begins: Escaping the Island Asylum

Your adventure starts in the dark, damp cells of the Island Asylum. This whole starting area is like a mini version of the full game, teaching you how to explore and survive in this harsh world.

Starting Your Legend: Character Creation

Before you even take a step, you’ll be questioned by a prison guard. Your answers about your life before prison will set your starting skills and stats. For instance, if you say you were a hunter, you’ll be better at archery. This is the first taste of how your choices shape your adventure.

Quest Guide: The Great Escape

The main goal here is simple: get out of the asylum. The quest kicks off when a knight named Caradoc frees you from your cell and tells you to find him deeper inside the prison.

You’ll find Caradoc leaning against a wall near a hole at the bottom of a long staircase. Whatever you do, don’t attack him. Before you meet him, make sure you explore the first few hallways thoroughly. You’ll want to grab a few key items:

  • Guard Key: Found on a dead guard sitting at a table. It unlocks a bunch of cells with useful loot.
  • Pickaxe: Stuck in a wall to the left of where you start, past a zombie ambush. You can use it to break down weak walls.
  • Shovel: Leaning against a wall after you go down some stairs. It’s used to dig up treasure all over Avalon.
  • Bow: You can find a bow on a dead guard near Caradoc. This is super helpful for a mini-boss fight coming up.

Once you’ve explored, fought your way through the asylum, and met up with Caradoc again, he’ll be waiting for you on a beach with a boat. Just interact with the boat to finish the prologue and finally reach Avalon.

The Horns of the South: A Kingdom Divided

When you arrive in the Horns of the South, the game really opens up. This land is torn between the knights of Kamelot and the local Dál Riata tribes who are rebelling. Your goal here is to get the first relic, Excalibur.

The Pivotal Choice: Shadow of the Horns

This quest is a huge deal and will change the rest of your game. You’re forced to pick a side in the conflict between the loyal Keepers of the Horns and the rebellious Dál Riata tribes. There’s no easy “good” or “bad” choice here; both sides are flawed. Your decision will lock you into one path, changing who your friends and enemies are.

Path 1: Siding with Galahad and the Path of Order

If you choose to support Kamelot, you’ll be working with the tough knight, Sir Galahad. The rebel leader will ask you to kill Galahad. Instead, go to the Abandoned Stronghold and show the guard the pin you were given to get a meeting with Galahad. Tell him about the plot against him. He’ll then ask for your help to crush the rebellion. If you agree, you’ll join him in an attack on the All-Mother’s Temple, where he slaughters the rebel leaders. This makes you an ally of Kamelot, but the Dál Riata tribes will hate you forever.

Path 2: Siding with the Rebellion

If you decide to go against Kamelot, you’ll need to follow through with the assassination. Go to the Abandoned Stronghold and tell Galahad you’re there to kill him. This starts a boss fight. After you defeat him, the whole stronghold will attack you, so either fight your way out or run. Make sure to loot his unique mace and armor. Report back to the rebel leader, Breandan, and when he talks about his plans, you must say “I’m listening” or the quest will fail. This path lets you learn some dark secrets about King Arthur and Merlin.

How to Get Excalibur

No matter which side you choose, you need that sword. Your quest giver will point you toward a ritual involving an Ancient Gong. You’ll need to get it repaired by a blacksmith, then sound it and survive the trial that follows to weaken the magic barrier around Excalibur.

However, there’s another way. The game allows you to just “brute force” it. You can walk up to the sword and start pulling. Your health will drain fast, but if you chug enough powerful health potions, you can out-heal the damage and yank it free. Be warned: some players report this can cause bugs with the “Shadow of the Horns” quest, so it’s a risky move.

Cuanacht: Unearthing the Secrets of the Sunken City

After getting Excalibur, you’ll gain access to Cuanacht, a land of swamps and sunken ruins. The story here is less about politics and more about diving into dungeons to learn about the Wyrdness. Your main goal is to find King Arthur’s Shield.

Diving into Cuanacht’s Dungeons

The main quest will lead you through two huge dungeons. The first is the Corrupted Temple, a Wyrdness-infested ruin. Inside, you’ll meet a trapped goddess, Neante, who asks you to find her lost voice, body, and sight, which are scattered around the temple. Helping her is the main way to get through this dungeon.

The second major dungeon is the Abyss of Sagremor, a massive underwater cavern holding a sunken castle. Once inside, you’ll meet the cursed Queen Sagremor. She’ll give you the “Throne of the Depths” quest, which involves helping her family to unlock the rest of the castle.

Claiming King Arthur’s Shield

By completing the “Throne of the Depths” quest in the Abyss of Sagremor, you will finally be rewarded with the second great relic: King Arthur’s Shield. With this in hand, the path to the final region opens.

The Forlorn Swords: Uniting the Tribes

The Forlorn Swords is a frozen, mountainous region and the last major area of the game. Here, the story shifts back to diplomacy and conflict. You have to unite the different Dál Riata tribes of the north to get the final relic, King Arthur’s Helm.

The Great Moot: Divided We Fall

This quest is the heart of this entire chapter. A leader named Gerf’hanr asks you to unite the four major tribes for a great council, or Moot. To do this, you have to solve each tribe’s unique problems by completing their questlines.

  • The Úlfr Tribe: You must challenge their tyrannical chief. This involves getting the blessing of three ancient Giants and crafting a special greatsword for the duel.
  • The Theud Tribe: You need to complete several tasks for their leader, The Mother, to convince them to send someone to the Moot.
  • The Volker Tribe: These people have been driven from their homes. You’ll need to clear out their ancestral village from invaders to restore their honor.
  • The Sveinn Tribe: This tribe’s faith has been corrupted. You must find and cleanse several of their shrines across the region.

Earning the Helm of Arthur

For each tribe you successfully convince to join the Moot, Gerf’hanr will give you a piece of King Arthur’s legendary armor set. Once the tribes are united and the Moot is held, you’ll proceed to the end of the region’s storyline, eventually facing a mysterious entity called the Stagfather and getting the final relic, King Arthur’s Helm.

The End of the Road: The Long Defeat and Final Choices

With all three relics in your possession, you’re ready for the finale, called “The Long Defeat.” This is the point of no return. Before you start, make sure you’ve finished any side quests you care about, especially if you’re aiming for the secret “True Ending.” Once you enter the final dungeon, the Charred Conclave, the entrance seals behind you forever.

Here, you make the final decision about what to do with King Arthur’s soul. There are four standard endings:

  1. Take the Power for Yourself: You absorb Arthur’s soul and become a new god-like figure in Avalon.
  2. Resurrect Arthur: You sacrifice yourself to bring King Arthur back to life.
  3. Give the Soul to Another: You can give Arthur’s power to a key character you’ve met, like Yvain or Gerf’hanr, leading to a unique outcome for each.
  4. Kill Arthur: You can side with Caradoc and destroy Arthur’s soul for good, leaving Avalon in chaos.

How to Get the True Ending in Tainted Grail: Beyond the Veil

There is a secret, hidden ending that many consider the best one, as it solves the island’s biggest problems, the Red Death and the Wyrdness. Getting it requires a lot of extra work throughout the entire game, and you must do it all before the final confrontation.

Here’s what you need to do:

First, you must visit three secret locations that are sealed by barriers. Only the main relics can open them. You have to enter the Archspire in the Horns of the South with Excalibur, a hidden mountain door in Cuanacht with the Shield of Palamedes, and the Weaver’s Sanctum in the Forlorn Swords with the Helm. In the final location, you’ll defeat a boss and get a special item called the Life Spindle.

Second, you have to find and clear five ancient tombs belonging to Arthur’s knights. These are also sealed by the relics. After clearing each tomb, a mysterious Pictish woman will appear and give you critical information. You must find a tomb on the Island Asylum, two in Cuanacht, and two in the Forlorn Swords.

If you have the Life Spindle and have spoken to the Pictish woman after clearing all five tombs, a new, secret dialogue option will appear during your final conversation with Arthur. Choosing this option allows Arthur to “ascend beyond mortality,” which calms the Wyrdness, ends the Red Death, and brings lasting peace to Avalon.

What Fate Will You Choose for Avalon?

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a huge adventure where your choices truly matter. From the first moments in the asylum to the final confrontation with a legendary king, the path you walk is your own. Whether you bring order or chaos, restore a king or claim power for yourself, or walk the long path to uncover the island’s deepest truths, the fate of Avalon is in your hands.
