AMD Drops Ryzen 8000 Series for Gaming Laptops

Next-Gen Power on Last-Gen Tech

AMD has pulled back the curtain on its latest Ryzen 8000 processors, designed to power high-end gaming laptops in 2025. Leading the charge is the Ryzen 9 8945HX, a 16-core, 32-thread beast with a boost clock reaching up to 5.4 GHz. While billed as “next-generation,” these chips stick to AMD’s Zen 4 architecture—last seen in the Ryzen 7000 series—rather than leaping to the newer Zen 5 found in other recent releases like the Ryzen AI 300 lineup.

The Ryzen 8000 family includes four new processors tailored for top-tier gaming rigs. Alongside the flagship Ryzen 9 8945HX, AMD introduced the Ryzen 9 8940HX, Ryzen 7 8840HX, and Ryzen 7 8745HX—the latter offering 8 cores and 16 threads with a 5.1 GHz boost. Despite leaning on Zen 4, these chips mirror their predecessors’ specs closely, like the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which also boasts 16 cores and a 5.4 GHz boost. However, AMD promises these processors will pair seamlessly with cutting-edge graphics, such as Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile, to deliver elite gaming performance.

AMD’s newly unveiled Ryzen 8000 processors, spearheaded by the powerhouse Ryzen 9 8945HX, bring Zen 4 muscle to gaming laptops, promising top-tier performance with up to 16 cores and 5.4 GHz boost clocks—proof that last-gen tech can still pack a punch in 2025. —IGN

While the Ryzen 8000 series skips Zen 5’s architectural leap, it still offers configurable power ranging from 55W to 75W—potentially boosting performance over lower-powered Zen 5 alternatives like the Ryzen AI HX 370. AMD fans waiting for these chips won’t have to wait long, as they’re expected to hit premium gaming laptops in the coming months. Stay tuned for hands-on benchmarks to see if this last-gen foundation can still compete in the next-gen arena!
