Getting Started: Your Buggy Taming Toolkit

Before you can ride into battle on the back of a giant spider, you need to set up the right gear. Taming Buggies isn’t as simple as giving a bug a treat; it requires a few key structures at your base.

The Hatchery: Where It All Begins

The Hatchery is the most important structure for taming. It’s where you’ll turn those precious eggs you find into loyal companions. You can’t do anything with Buggy eggs until you have one.

To unlock the recipe, you need to follow the main story quest until it leads you to find the “Snackbar TURBO Optical Disk.” Once you return that disk to a terminal, the “Hatchery Bundle” will become available in the Science Shop for 500 Raw Science.

Hatchery Crafting Recipe:

  • 6 Weed Stem
  • 1 Acorn Top
  • 6 Acorn Shell
  • 5 Mite Fuzz

Nests: A Home for Your New Friends

You can only have one Buggy active at a time, so you’ll need a place to store the others. That’s where Nests come in. Each type of Buggy needs its own specific Nest. Building one lets you swap between your tamed creatures.

Ant Nest Crafting Recipe:

  • 6 Weed Stem
  • 6 Clover Leaf
  • 3 Crude Rope
  • 1 Acorn Shell

Spider Nest Crafting Recipe:

  • 6 Weed Stem
  • 6 Pine Needle
  • 6 Web Fibre
  • 4 Silk Rope

The Taming Process: From Egg to Ally

The process for taming any Buggy is the same:

  1. Find the Egg: Locate the specific egg for the Buggy you want.
  2. Carry the Egg: You have to physically carry the large egg back to your base.
  3. Incubate: Place the egg in your Hatchery and provide the materials for its saddle.
  4. Wait: The incubation process takes 12 in-game hours.

Here’s the tricky part: while carrying an egg, you can’t use any weapons or tools. If an enemy attacks, you have to drop the egg, fight, and then pick it back up. Mastering this “drop-and-fight” dance is key to getting your egg home safely.

Meet the Early Access Buggies

In the current Early Access version of Grounded 2, there are two Buggies you can tame. They serve completely different purposes, making both essential for mastering the park.

The Red Soldier Ant: Your Go-To Workhorse

The Red Soldier Ant is the first Buggy you’ll likely get, and it’s an absolute survival powerhouse. Think of it as your all-in-one utility vehicle, perfect for base building and resource gathering.

Key Abilities:

  • Traversal: It can chew through Dead Roots, clearing paths to new areas.
  • Hauling: It can carry a massive stack of Weed Stems or Grass Planks, making base building way more efficient.
  • Resource Gathering: It automatically picks up small resources as you walk over them and has its own inventory for extra storage.
  • Diplomatic Immunity: While riding it, you can enter enemy ant hills without being attacked. This is a huge deal for safe exploration.

To get the Red Soldier Ant, you need to start the “Egg Hunt” main quest. This will lead you to the Hatchery Anthill, where you’ll find the eggs at the end of a destroyed Ominent lab.

Red Soldier Ant Saddle:

  • 3 Sprig
  • 1 Acorn Shell

The Orb Weaver: The Agile Combat Specialist

If the ant is a workhorse, the Orb Weaver is a warhorse. This Buggy is built for one thing: destruction. It’s your go-to mount for aggressive combat and tricky traversal.

Key Abilities:

  • Traversal: It can walk across spiderwebs, including large “web bridges” that connect to high-up, otherwise unreachable areas.
  • Web Throw: It can shoot a web to trap enemies, holding them in place for easy attacks.
  • Intimidating Roar: It can let out a roar that stuns or scares nearby insects, giving you a moment to breathe.

Unlocking the Orb Weaver is an end-game task for the current content. You must complete all of the Act 1 story quests. After that, you can buy the “Orb Weaver Buggy Bundle” for 5,000 Raw Science. The eggs are found in the spider nest directly underneath the giant, headless BURG.L robot in the center of the map.

Orb Weaver Saddle:

  • 3 Blueberry Leather
  • 4 Red Ant Mandibles
  • 3 Acorn Shells

Pro Tips & Advanced Tactics

Knowing how to get your Buggies is only half the battle. Using them effectively is what makes the difference.

Workhorse vs. Warhorse: Choosing the Right Buggy

A Warning for Hardcore Players: “Whoa!” Mode

Be careful if you’re playing on the highest difficulty, “Whoa!”. On this mode, if your Buggy dies in combat, it is gone forever. This raises the stakes significantly, making every fight a critical decision when your valuable mount is on the line. On lower difficulties, a defeated Buggy will simply return to its Nest after a cooldown period.

What’s Next? A Peek at Future Buggies

The developers at Obsidian have already shared a roadmap, and more Buggies are on the way! The current system is just the beginning.

The winter update is confirmed to bring the Ladybug Buggy, which will likely be a defensive tank, perfect for absorbing damage. Further down the line, in the summer of 2026, Aquatic Buggies are planned, which will completely change how we explore the ponds and waterways of Brookhollow Park.
