Okay, so you did it. After all that tracking, and maybe a heart stopping fight, you’ve finally taken down a Legendary Animal. That incredible, one of a kind pelt is resting on the back of your horse, and you’re feeling like a true legend yourself. Maybe it was that giant bear that ambushed you near camp, or that ghost white bison from high up in the mountains. The hard part is over… right? But now comes that big question. You’re probably staring at this amazing pelt and thinking, “…now what?”
You could try taking it to the Butcher in Valentine, but he’ll just scratch his head. He’s a good man for selling deer hides and wolf carcasses, but a Legendary Pelt is something else entirely. It’s special. It’s the stuff of myth. And there’s only one man in the entire world who knows what to do with it.
This mysterious, nomadic craftsman is one of the most important people you will meet in all of Red Dead Redemption 2. He is a master of his trade, a man who lives off the land and can turn the spoils of your hunt into unique, powerful gear that you cannot find anywhere else. He is the only person who will buy your Legendary Pelts and the only one who can craft them into incredible outfits, hats, and saddles that will make you the envy of the Van der Linde gang.
Finding him, however, can be a challenge. He’s a man of the wilderness and is often on the move. But don’t you worry. This guide is your personal map to every single one of his known locations. We’ll show you where he sets up his main stall and where to find his hidden wilderness campsites, so you’ll never be far from a place to sell your prize pelts and craft some of the best gear in the game.

Now, let’s saddle up and take a tour of each one.
The Main Hub: The Saint Denis Market Stall
If you’re looking for the most reliable, always there Trapper location, this is it. Deep in the heart of the sprawling, muddy city of Saint Denis, the Trapper has set up his main place of business.
- The Journey: Ride into the industrial, smog filled city of Saint Denis. Navigate the bustling streets filled with streetcars and fancy folk until you find the large, open air market on the eastern side of the city. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see dozens of stalls selling everything from fish to newspapers.
- The Location: The Trapper’s stall is unmistakable. It’s covered in hides, pelts, antlers, and all manner of hunting trophies. It stands out like a slice of the wild frontier dropped right into the middle of civilization. You’ll often find him skinning an animal or tending to his wares right there in the open.
- Why It’s Great: This is his primary store. It’s always open, day or night, rain or shine. Because it’s in a major city, it’s a perfect place to visit after a trip to the tailor or gunsmith. If you ever have a massive haul of pelts and want to guarantee he’s available, make the trip to Saint Denis.

His Camps in the Wild: Where the Real Magic Happens
Look, the city stall is fine and dandy if you happen to be nearby. But if you ask me, the real magic is stumbling upon one of his campsites out in the middle of nowhere.
This is where the Trapper is truly at home, surrounded by the very wilderness that fuels his craft. He’s not just a shopkeeper out here; he’s part of the landscape. And he’s smart about it, too each one of his camps is perfectly placed in a fantastic hunting spot, just waiting for you.
1. The Roanoke Ridge Post (New Hanover)
This is likely the first wilderness location you’ll stumble upon, located deep in the woods of New Hanover.
- The Journey: Ride northeast from Emerald Ranch or northwest from the mining town of Annesburg. You’re headed for the Roanoke Ridge region, a land of thick forests and winding rivers. Follow the path that runs alongside the Elysian Pool.
- The Location: The Trapper has set up his camp on a wooded plateau just off the main road. It’s a classic campsite, complete with a roaring fire, a tanning rack, and his signature tent adorned with pelts. It’s directly west of the “N” in “Roanoke” on your map. The sound of his chopping or the sight of his campfire smoke will often give him away.
- Why It’s Great: This location is perfectly positioned for hunting in the eastern part of the map. The forests of Roanoke Ridge are teeming with deer, elk, cougars, and black bears. It’s an ideal spot to drop off your pelts after a long hunt in the area.

2. The Western Woods (Big Valley, West Elizabeth)
High up in the hills of West Elizabeth, this campsite feels wonderfully remote and wild.
- The Journey: From the town of Strawberry, ride directly north up into the mountains. You’re heading for the Big Valley region, known for its beautiful fields of flowers and towering redwood trees.
- The Location: The Trapper is set up on a hill just west of the road leading out of Strawberry, overlooking the valley below. It’s nestled in a small clearing in the woods. If you’re riding along the western edge of the map, north of the Owanjila Dam, you’ll likely see his campfire from a distance.
- Why It’s Great: This is your go to spot for any hunting trips in the western part of the map. The area is rich with game, including the starting location for one of the Legendary Bucks. Its proximity to Strawberry makes it a convenient stop before heading back to civilization.

3. The Southern Riverside (Near Riggs Station, West Elizabeth)
This campsite is perched on a bluff with a beautiful view, making it a scenic and useful location.
- The Journey: This one is easy to find. Head to Riggs Station, the train station just across the river from Valentine. From there, ride a short distance southwest.
- The Location: The Trapper’s camp is on top of a wooded hill overlooking the Upper Montana River, just southeast of the words “Riggs Station” on your map. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot that’s surprisingly close to some of the game’s most central areas.
- Why It’s Great: Its central location makes it one of the most useful wilderness spots. It’s easily accessible from Valentine, Strawberry, and the gang’s camp in the early chapters. If you’re hunting in the Heartlands or the hills of West Elizabeth, this is often your closest and most convenient drop-off point.

4. The Deep Wilderness (Tall Trees, West Elizabeth)
A Quick Word of Warning: This location is in the Tall Trees region. For most of the main story, this area is extremely dangerous and you will be hunted relentlessly by lawmen if you venture here. It’s best to avoid this spot until you have reached the Epilogue of the game.
- The Journey: Once you’ve reached the Epilogue, this location becomes a key outpost. Ride west out of Blackwater into the dense, imposing forest of Tall Trees.
- The Location: The Trapper is located in the western part of Tall Trees, just northeast of the “T” in “Tall” on your map. He’s set up in a clearing not far from the road leading towards the Manzanita Post.
- Why It’s Great: In the late game, this becomes your primary hunting post for the southern and western regions of the map. Tall Trees is home to some unique and dangerous animals, and having the Trapper right there is incredibly useful.

A Hunter’s Guide to the Trapper: Common Questions
Now that you know where to find him, here are the answers to a few common questions that will make your life as a hunter much easier.
What Happens If I Die With a Legendary Pelt?
This is the single biggest fear of every hunter. You’ve just spent an hour tracking a Legendary Animal, you have its priceless pelt on your horse, and you get ambushed by rivals on the way to the Trapper. You die. Is the pelt gone forever? No!
The game has a wonderful failsafe. If you lose a Legendary Pelt for any reason, it is automatically sent to the Trapper. You will lose out on the money you would have gotten for selling it to him, but the pelt itself will be available in his inventory for crafting. So take a deep breath and relax. You can never permanently lose the ability to craft a Legendary item.
How Does Crafting Work, Exactly?
It’s a simple, two-step process.
- Sell Him the Ingredients: You must first sell the required pelts (Legendary or Perfect) to the Trapper. This adds them to his inventory and “unlocks” the recipe for the gear.
- Buy the Final Product: Once he has the necessary pelts, you can browse his wares under the “Craft” menu and purchase the final item with cash. Some items only require a single Legendary Pelt, while others might require that plus several other perfect pelts from different animals.

Trapper vs. Butcher: Where Should I Sell?
This is a great question, and the answer is actually pretty simple. Think of it like this:
The Butcher in town is your go to guy for quick cash. He’ll happily buy your regular meat, animal carcasses, and any pelts that aren’t perfect. He’s perfect for your everyday hunting trips when you just want to make a few bucks.
But the Trapper… he’s a specialist. He’s the only one who knows the true value of a Legendary pelt or a perfect hide. He’s the artist who can turn those incredible materials into gear you can’t get anywhere else.
So here’s the simple rule to remember: If it’s for eating or just some quick cash, sell it to the Butcher. If it’s a Legendary pelt or a Perfect pelt that you want to use for crafting, it always goes to the Trapper.
And that’s all there is to it. You know the man, you know his secret spots, and you know why he’s so important. The wilderness is calling your name. Happy hunting, partner.
