If you’ve reached Slay the Spire 2 the Trial Event and aren’t sure what to do, you’ve come to the right place. I played through different scenarios, so you don’t have to. In case you want a quick answer, just read the quick takeaway below. But if you want to know more, keep reading.
The Trial Event Quick Guide:
- Accepting the Trial: You will become the Decider and have to judge a nobleman’s trial. Guilty will give you 10 HP and Innocent will give you 300 gold but adds Regret to your deck.
- Refusing the Trial: You will be warned of the consequences. If you keep refusing, you’ll simply die and your run ends.
What You’ll Read:
What Is The Trial Event?
If you reach Act 3, you will come across the Trial event. This short narrative event is basically your jury duty. Here’s the story:
You stand in a long line of people to enter a massive building. Passing under a golden archway, you hear horns blaring and watch as streamers glide down from the ceiling through fluttering confetti.
A mysterious figure called the Grand Arbiter of the Courts calls you “Entrant 332” and says, “You are the Decider for today’s court.” You can either accept or refuse but he strongly warns against refusing the trial.

What Will Happen If You Accept?
If you accept, you’ll sit in the decision-making chair and the trial begins. The defendant is a powerful noble who barely argues against the corruption charges and merely smirks. You find a note in your pocket that offers you a generous reward if you declare the nobleman innocent. The restless crowd urges you to decide.
What will you decide?
- Guilty: Heal 10 HP.
- Innocent: Receive 300 gold but add Regret to your deck.

Which One Should You Choose: Guilty or Innocent?
So, which decision is a better strategy for your game? That entirely depends on your build and deck needs at the moment. Are you low on HP like I was? Get the free 10 HP heal. It’s the safest option. (and probably the most ethical.)
Are you feeling greedy? Do you have shop coming up? Then you can consider choosing Innocent. Just keep in mind, you have to have a reliable build to get rid of curses. Otherwise, that “Regret” curse can affect your deck badly.
What Will Happen If You Refuse?
If you double down and say no, the Grand Arbiter warns you of grave consequences. “Those who reject this privilege,” he says, “are penalized with death.” You have one more chance to give and avoid lethal repercussions.
Unfortunately, he isn’t lying. If you refuse a second time, you do simply die and your run ends there! So you have an illusion of choice. You have to accept and make a decision. Maybe this will change in the full release version.

Are There Any Secret Rewards for Refusing?
Like you, I was curious to see what happens if I say no. Maybe there will be a fight, some reward or at least an easter egg, right? Nope. It’s just instant death. Other players in community forums confirmed this as well. I thought maybe a Fairy in a Bottle could save me from dying, but that doesn’t work either.
So there is no real reason to refuse. Maybe Mega Crit will change this in the full release, but in the meantime, it only offers a short curiosity, followed by disappointment.
