Most Shape of Dreams Tier List are misleading. They tell you to play characters that die the second things get hard. If you want to beat Stage 3 on Nightmare difficulty, you need a Traveler that actually scales. This list ranks every character based on their raw power and survivability.
Shape of Dreams Tier List Quick Takeaway:
| Tier | Travelers | Review |
| S-Tier | Bismuth, Aurena | Total carries. Bismuth is a cheat code. Aurena becomes a god with the right essence. |
| A-Tier | Lacerta, Nachia, Mist | Strong picks. These require skill or specific setups but win runs consistently. |
| B-Tier | Yubar, Shell, Vesper | Niche or outdated. They are either too slow or too risky for high-difficulty clears. |
This Tier list is for players who already know the basics. If you’re new to the game, go read the Shape of Dreams walkthrough first.
What You’ll Read
S-Tier: The Dream Breakers
These characters are the meta. If you are a beginner or love slicing through bosses, pick one of these.
Bismuth
SOD players mostly agree on Bismuth as the most broken. Her floating book handles basic attacks automatically. You can focus entirely on dodges while she deals constant damage.
Her Pure Soul missiles slow enemies down and control space effortlessly. She survives Nightmare difficulty without a problem because she literally plays the game on auto-pilot.

How to Unlock Bismuth: Keep any Traveler’s Movement Speed above 900 for 3 seconds. Grab Mist, equip the Fleche memory, and stack speed fragments or Corrosive Trails to hit the cap.
Aurena
Aurena is the ultimate high-risk gamble. As a battle healer, she drains her own life force to deal massive damage. Without the right setup, she’s likely to die on Stage 3.
Get the Clemency essence to transform her into an unstoppable goddess. Clemency gives a massive boost to all her recovery stats and turns her Golden Burst nuke into an infinite sustain engine. She is also the absolute best support pick for co-op runs.

How to Unlock Aurena: Heal yourself or allies for a total of 25,000 Health. You can grind this out naturally over a few runs. Just prioritize lifesteal essences and health drops.
A-Tier: The Powerful Contenders
These characters are incredibly strong and can easily feel like S-Tier with the right build. They just have slightly more risk, RNG, or skill requirements than the top two.
Lacerta
Lacerta is my most reliable pick for a standard run. She is a kite specialist with a great range and fire damage. She doesn’t have the auto-win abilities that S-Tier Dreamers have. Still, her consistent damage is perfect to clear Stage 3.
Focus on critical strikes and fire essences to get the most out of her build. Play her if you want to stay far away from danger.

How to Unlock Lacerta: Finish the tutorial. You get her for free at the start.
Nachia
Nachia is a summoner. Her leaf hounds do the heavy lifting while you stay back. She has strong self-healing and gets very tanky with passives that boost her summons.
She is not S-Tier because her early game is slow. Stack ability power for the late game. Her werewolf buddy will eventually become an unkillable monster.

How to Unlock Nachia: Defeat the Demon of the Forest 20 times.
Mist
Mist is a fast assassin with mixed opinions among fans. She has the highest skill ceiling in the game. Her Fleche dash gives her invincibility frames. That means you are untouchable if you time it right. But she is a glass cannon. One mistake on Nightmare difficulty ends your run. Use the Paranoia essence to automate her dashes. This turns her into a constant blur of blades.

How to Unlock Mist: Complete the tutorial. She is available right from the start.
B-Tier: The Challenging Picks
Yubar
Yubar is another glass cannon, minus the cannon. He has high Ability Power, but he is way too slow for Nightmare difficulty. You need specific synergies like Momentum and Frostbite to survive with Yubar.
If the RNG doesn’t go your way, you are easy prey. My verdict is he is fun for lower difficulties, but he just can’t keep up with the late game’s speed.

How to Unlock Yubar: Gather 450 Dream Dust across your runs. You will hit this number just by playing the game and breaking shards.
Shell
Shell is the most unanimous choice for the B-tier. His passive converts all Attack Speed into Attack Damage. This sounds great on paper, but it makes your attacks feel heavy and sluggish.
You have to time every swing perfectly. If you miss a dodge because you were stuck in an animation, the run is ruined. He is a high-skill character that requires way too much work for a mediocre payoff. Pick him if you want a challenge.

How to Unlock Shell: Head to the Whispering Lotus Plateau in World 3. Look for the small soul icons on the map. Collect three of these red souls and feed them to the wooden doll at the boss room entrance.
Vesper
Vesper is the most polarizing character. He is a tank in a game where tanking doesn’t work at the end! He has great sustain and healing early on. However, Nightmare difficulty damage is too high to soak.
You will get melted in seconds if you try to trade hits with late-game bosses. He is a solid pick for beginners who need extra safety, though.

How to Unlock Vesper Reach the Starry Dream map in World 3. You just need to survive long enough to make it to the final world rotation.
The Armory: Best Memories & Essences
Your character choice is just the base. The items you stack decide if you finish Nightmare mode or die in Stage 1. Don’t just grab every shiny item you see. Focus on these meta picks to break the game.
Check out Shape of Dreams Character Builds to learn the best items in detail for each Dreamer.
| Item | Why it’s Meta | Best Synergy |
| Clemency | This essence makes you unkillable. It turns small heals into massive health gains. | Aurena |
| Frostbite | You get an instant shield on cast. It is a lifesaver for slow Travelers. | Yubar |
| Paranoia | You gain temporary Memory Haste. It is automatically cast on nearby enemies. | Mist |
| Glacial Core | Dealing damage with this memory restores your maximum health and fires ice shards to nearby enemies. This is how you deal with bosses. | Vesper |
| Quicksilver | Casting this Memory increases Movement Speed. It’s a loop for high-speed players. | Shell |
