You have three choices: Knight, Sorcerer, and Thief. While the Knight is tanky, the correct answer for any new player is the Thief. The reason is one single stat: Speed (SPD).
BLACK SOULS uses an Active Time Battle (ATB) system. This means both you and your enemies have a gauge that fills up over time, and when it’s full, you get to take a turn. The SPD stat determines how fast that gauge fills.
The Thief starts with the highest SPD, which means you’ll be taking two, sometimes even three, turns before a slow enemy gets to move even once. This isn’t just a small advantage; it’s a game-breaking one.

This path also leads you to an NPC named Wilt. DON’T kill him. Just talk to him, he’ll reward you with a hefty 5,000 souls and aks you to get him a match. It’s a win-win.

Loot the Prologue

You’ll be rewarded with two rings:
- Silver Ring of Avarice: Doubles the souls you get from enemies.
- Golden Ring of Avarice: Doubles the item drop rate from enemies.
Equip these immediately. The Silver Ring, in particular, will make leveling up so much faster.

- Best Weapon: Choose Morganstein as your weapon. It can stun bosses. Once you level up to 10, go to the sewers and kill slimes to get ores needed to upgrade the Morganstein. You will need at least nine ores.
- Hansel and Gretel: Do not get the breadcrumbs of Hansel and Gretel, unless you want to the watch them turn into monsters!
- Princess Frog’s Ring: Visit the swamp and talk to the Princess Frog to get her ring and covenant. This prevents you from losing levels at level one.
- Increase the Game’s Difficulty: Once you’re strong enough, use the bunnies to raise the difficulty. This multiplies the souls you earn and lets you skyrocket your levels.
