First Steps into the Nightmare
Before you dive headfirst into danger, a couple of key decisions and one crucial mechanic will define your entire experience.
Low vs. Alone
At the start, you have to pick between the two protagonists, and your choice is locked in for that playthrough.
- Low (The boy with the crow mask): Low is your ranged specialist. His bow is perfect for hitting distant switches, cutting ropes, and dealing with small, pesky enemies from a safe distance. If you prefer a more strategic and cautious approach, he’s your guy.
- Alone (The girl with the wrench): Alone is all about getting up close and personal. Her trusty wrench can smash through weak barriers, turn stubborn cranks, and smack any enemies that get too close. If you like solving physical puzzles and aren’t afraid of a little direct confrontation, choose Alone.

Sheathing Your Weapon!
Listen up, because this is the single most important tip in the entire game. You cannot run, jump, or hang from ledges while your weapon is equipped. If you find yourself unable to make a jump or grab a ledge, it’s almost certainly because you’re still holding your bow or wrench. Make it a habit to put your tool away the second you’re done using it. You’ll save yourself from a lot of cheap deaths.
The Rules of Survival
The world of Little Nightmares is designed to kill you. Here’s how to stay alive.
Stealth vs. Sprinting
Most of the time, stealth is your best friend. The giant, horrifying monsters roaming around are not meant to be fought. Take a moment to observe your surroundings from a safe spot. Every monster has a predictable patrol pattern or line of sight. Learn it before you make your move. Hiding in shadows or behind objects is your primary defense.
However, sometimes the game will make it very clear that it’s time to book it. When a chase sequence kicks off, don’t even think about hiding. Just run and focus on climbing and vaulting over obstacles to escape.
The World is Your Puzzle
If you feel stuck in a room, you’re not you’ve just missed a clue. The environment itself is the biggest puzzle. Try to interact with everything. Push, pull, and climb on objects. Look for visual hints like cracked walls or loose floorboards, as they almost always indicate a breakable path or a hidden entrance. And don’t forget to think vertically; the solution is often above or below you, not straight ahead.
These tips should help you solve most of the environmental puzzles you encounter. However, if you’re ever completely stuck and just want the direct solution for a specific room, our full Little Nightmares 3 Walkthrough will guide you step by step.
Mastering Co-op
Whether you’re playing online with a friend or solo with an AI partner, teamwork is mandatory. You literally cannot progress without it.
A Tale of Two Tools
Every puzzle in this game is designed for two. You’ll constantly find situations where one character has to do something so the other can advance. Is there a switch high up on a wall? That’s a job for Low’s bow. Is there a stuck mechanism that needs turning? Alone and her wrench are on the case. Always be looking for ways your unique tools can work together.
The Call Button is Your Best Friend in Solo Play
If you’re playing alone, your AI partner is surprisingly helpful. If you get stuck and don’t know what to do next, just use the Call button (Triangle on PlayStation / Y on Xbox). Your AI partner will often run over to the next interactive object or perform the action needed to show you the way forward. They’re basically a walking, talking hint system.

For the Completionists
For those who like to find every last secret, the game has you covered.
Finding the Collectible Dolls
The main collectibles in the game are small dolls hidden in each chapter, and finding them all is often tied to a specific achievement. They are usually tucked away in side rooms or off the main path, so a little exploration is always rewarded. For a complete list of all trophies and achievements, be sure to check out our detailed Little Nightmares 3 Achievements Guide.
Chapter Select is a Lifesaver
Missed a doll? No problem. Once you’ve completed a chapter, you can replay it anytime from the main menu. The menu even tracks how many collectibles you’ve found in each stage, making it easy to go back and hunt for the ones you missed without having to start the entire game over.
With these tips in mind, you’re ready to face the nightmares of The Spiral. Enjoy the journey, and once you’ve seen the credits roll, you’ll likely have a lot of questions. When that time comes, be sure to visit our Little Nightmares 3 Ending Explained guide to unravel the shocking final twist.
